Este domingo culminó el sueño del Equipo CELSIA Colombia de ascender al Grupo Mundial de Copa Davis por BNP Paribas, tras la caída de Santiago Giraldo ante Marin Cilic en el cuarto punto de la serie entre Colombia y Croacia.

Cilic, actual número 5 del mundo, venció en el duelo de raquetas número uno de cada país a Giraldo (131°) con parciales 6-3, 6-4 y 6-4 en una hora y 48 minutos, concluyendo de esta forma el objetivo de nuestro país de lograr por primera vez estar en el grupo de los 16 mejores de esta competencia.

El croata, quien este año fue finalista de Wimbledon y ganó el US Open en 2014, inició con pie derecho el primer set quebrando en el segundo game, ventaja que le sirvió para terminar ganándolo. Luego, Giraldo empezó a sentir más confianza con la pelota y estuvo firme durante el segundo parcial, sin embargo, en el quinto juego Cilic aprovechó un nuevo quiebre para ponerse a un set del triunfo.

El colombiano siempre estuvo acompañado por el aliento del público que no dejó de apoyarlo durante el encuentro, pero esto no fue impedimento para que Cilic se llevara el punto definitivo y el triunfo en la serie.

“Di lo que pude y los doblistas también lo hicieron el sábado. El partido de hoy fue cerrado, solo un break por set. Así que solo queda aceptar las cosas, que el equipo hizo todo lo posible y Croacia fue justo ganador", expresó el colombiano en rueda de prensa. "Marin jugó de manera espectacular, ha jugado los tres días y hace poco dijo que este fue su mejor partido y que estaba feliz. No me dio margen ni chances en la devolución y tuvo un buen día con su saque".  

Giraldo además destacó lo que ha logrado el tenis colombiano en la Copa Davis en los últimos años, donde siempre se ha luchado por estar entre los mejores. "Nosotros estamos actualmente en el Grupo I y hay muchos equipos europeos, de mucha tradición, que están en el Grupo II luchando por estar en el Grupo I. La realidad es que siempre estamos peleando entre los mejores 20 equipos del mundo. En los cinco plays-off que hemos tenido, siempre hemos llegado hasta el domingo y hemos estado cerca de ganar. No ha alcanzado, pero yo como tenista me he dado cuenta que he dado lo que he tenido y no me puedo exigir más. He podido llegar hasta este punto y estoy orgulloso de lo que he tenido", manifestó.

Durante la atención a los medios también tuvo la palabra Felipe Berón, entrenador del tenista colombiano, quien reconoció que el objetivo de 2018 será poder estar otra vez luchando en esta instancia. "El próximo va a ser un año bien difícil porque sabemos que Argentina perdió y Brasil también está a punto de perder, por lo que vamos a estar luchando con ellos en esa zona. Pero el objetivo va a ser el mismo de luchar por el play-off de Grupo Mundial". 

De otro lado, Marin Cilic, quien estuvo presente en tres de los cuatro puntos ganados por Croacia, se convirtió en el tenista de ese país con más victorias en Copa Davis, tras superar a Ivan Ljubicic. "Es un logro para mí llegar a 24 triunfos, me da mucho honor y mucho orgullo. He estado tantos años en la Copa Davis y darle algo a mi equipo es un gran placer". Mientras que el capitán Zeljko Krajan dejó claro lo satisfecho que lo deja este triunfo. "Tal vez estaba un poco asustado en esta serie porque estábamos lejos de casa y eran condiciones a las que no estábamos acostumbrados, lo que hizo todo un poco difícil".

"Siento que en esta eliminatoria estuvimos a un set de poder llevarnos esta confrontación, pero, así como estás de cerca, también estás muy lejos. El partido de ayer (sábado) fue muy cerrado y pudo ser para cualquiera, y ese era un punto muy importante", expresó Pablo González, capitán del equipo, quien además habló sobre el futuro del conjunto nacional. "Sí, seguro vamos a tener el grupo más complicado en Copa Davis el próximo año, así que hay que estar preparados porque siempre que estemos en una cancha vamos a estar soñando con llevar a Colombia a lo más alto. Y si algún día se nos llega a dar al Grupo Mundial, lo disfrutaremos".

En el último partido de la jornada, el croata Viktor Galovic (239°) superó al colombiano Alejandro González (484°) por 6-4, 2-6 y 6-2 para cerrar la serie a favor de los europeos por 4-1.

Hay que resaltar que, en la jornada del viernes, Marin Cilic venció a Alejandro González por 6-4, 6-1 y 6-4 y puso adelanta a Croacia en la serie; y luego Santiago Giraldo puso la igualdad al doblegar a Franko Skugor por marcador 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 y 6-2. El sábado, entretanto, Marin Cilic y Nikola Mektic superaron a Juan Sebastián Cabal y Alejandro Falla por marcador 5-7, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 y 6-4.

Las confrontaciones de Copa Davis se juegan a cinco puntos, cuatro de sencillos y uno de dobles. El equipo que consiga tres de los cinco puntos, gana la serie. Los partidos se juegan al mejor de cinco sets, tal como sucede en los torneos de Grand Slam.

Davis Cup: Marin Cilic beats Santiago Giraldo and Colombia stays in Group I of the Americas Zone

This Sunday, CELSIA Team Colombia’s dream of joining the World Group in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas came to an end with Santiago Giraldo’s defeat against Marin Cilic for the fourth point in this tie between Colombia and Croatia.

Cilic, currently the world’s number 5, won this dual between each country’s number one player, with Giraldo (ranked 131) losing 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The match lasted one hour 48 minutes and brought an end to our country’s aim of joining, for the very first time, the group of the top 16 countries competing in the tournament.

The Croatian, who was a Wimbledon finalist this year and won the US Open in 2014, started well breaking serve in the second game and holding his lead to win the set. Then Giraldo grew in confidence, his ball skills improved and he played well in the second set – before Ciic broke again in the fifth game to win.

The Colombian received tremendous support from the crowd who never stopped cheering him on during the match, although this didn’t stop Cilic taking the final point to win the tie.

“I gave everything I could, as did our doubles players on Saturday. The match today was close, with just one break per set. We just need to accept everything – the team gave it’s all and Croatia deserved to win”, the Colombian said during the press conference. "Marin played amazingly, he’s played each of the three days and just said that this was his best match and that he was happy. He didn’t give me leave any margin or opportunities with returns and he had a great day with his serve. ".  

Giraldo also highlighted that this is the best achievement by Colombian tennis in the Davis Cup over the last few years, where they’ve always fought to be amongst the best teams in important qualifications. “We are currently in Group I and there are a number of European teams with great reputations who are in Group II fighting to join Group I. The reality is that we are regularly competing against the world’s top 20 teams. In the five play-offs that we’ve had, we’ve always made it to Sunday and come close to winning. We haven’t made it yet, but personally, as a player, I know I’ve given everything I’ve got and I couldn't ask any more of myself. I’m proud to have made it to this point and of everything I had”, he said.

Felipe Berón, the Colombian player’s coach, also spoke to the media to say that the team’s 2018 objective will be to fight to reach this stage of the competition again. “Next year will be hard because we know that Argentina lost already and Brazil is about to lose, but we’re going to fight hard within this zone. But our goal will be unchanged – to fight to reach the World Group play-offs”.

Marin Cilic, who played in three of the four points won by Croatia, became his country’s most successful Davis Cup singles player, overtaking Ivan Ljubicic. "It’s a great achievement for me to reach 24 wins, I’m honoured and proud. I’ve been playing in the Davis Cup for so many years now, and to win it for the team was a real pleasure”. Meanwhile, their captain, Zeljko Krajan, talked about how pleased he was with this victory. "Maybe for us at the start of the tie it was hard because the conditions were so different to those that we were used to making it more challenging for us”.

"I think that we were one set away from taking this tie – but we weren’t close enough. Yesterday’s match (Saturday) was very close and either side could have won and that was a really important point”, said Pablo González, team captain, who went on to talk about the national team’s future. "Yes, we’re going to have the toughest Davis Cup group next year, so we need to be prepared. Every time we are on court, we’re going to dreaming of taking Colombia to the next level. And if one day we make it to the World Group, we’ll really enjoy it”.

In the last match of the day, Croatian Viktor Galovic (ranked 239) beat Colombian Alejandro González (ranked 484) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to end the tie with the Europeans winning 4-1.

To recap, on Friday Marin Cilic (ranked 5) beat Alejandro González 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 to give Croatia the lead in the tie; then Santiago Giraldo levelled things up by beating Franko Skugor 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Then on Saturday Marin Cilic and Nikola Mektic defeated Juan Sebastián Cabal and Alejandro Falla 5-7, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Davis Cup ties are played for five points, four singles and one doubles. The first team to win three points wins the tie. The matches are played for a best of five sets, as is the case in Grand Slam tournaments.
